About
Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone, 180 meters above sea level, is a volcanic cone that erupted underwater approximately 5,000 years ago, a rare occurrence among Jeju Island's many craters. The eruption, which occurred when lava mixed with water, broke the lava into fine volcanic ash, which accumulated in a conical shape around the crater. Originally a volcanic island, it became connected to the land by sand and gravel accumulating between the island and the land near Sinyang Beach. At the summit of Ilchulbong is a crater with a diameter of 600m, a base elevation of 90m above sea level, and an area of 214,400㎡. Since ancient times, the sunrise view from the summit of Seongsan Ilchulbong has been considered the best among the Yeongju 10 Sceneries (Jeju's scenic spots). The blazing sunrise rising from the horizon beyond the shimmering blue sea dyes the entire ocean and captivates the hearts of onlookers, inspiring spontaneous admiration.
