About
Bongeunsa Temple is a millennium-old temple located in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, the heart of Seoul. It was founded in 794 by National Preceptor Yeonhoe and was initially called Gyeonseongsa Temple. Later, in 1498, Queen Jeonghyeon, King Seongjong's second wife, extensively rebuilt the temple, which was located east of King Seongjong's tomb (Seolleung), and renamed it Bongeunsa Temple. During the Joseon Dynasty, it was the head temple of the Seonjong (Zen) school, representing the Jogye Order, and in modern times, it was the site where Dongguk Yeokgyeongwon, an institution for translating Buddhist scriptures and training disciples, was established. Today, Bongeunsa Temple is creating a new history of Buddhism through its practice-centered temple operations. Through various programs, including Templestay, Buddhist University, and Scripture School, it not only widely promotes high-quality Korean Buddhist culture domestically and internationally but also strives to maintain its status as a major urban temple that realizes social welfare.
