About
Gyeongju Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond is the site of a detached palace of the Silla royal family. It was used as the Crown Prince's palace, along with other auxiliary buildings, and was a venue for banquets during national celebrations or when receiving honored guests. After the fall of Silla, wild geese and ducks flew to this place, so it was formerly called Anapji Pond, using the characters for wild goose (an) and duck (ap). However, in 2011, its name was changed to Gyeongju Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. In 1980, three Silla building sites, including the presumed Imhaejeon Hall, and Wolji Pond were restored, bringing it to its current state. It has been confirmed that Donggung Palace had a total of 27 buildings, including Imhaejeon Hall, but only three have been restored. The splendid lighting illuminating these buildings and their reflection on Wolji Pond make it one of Gyeongju's representative night view attractions.
