About

Tongin Market originated from a public market established in June 1941 for Japanese residents near Hyoja-dong during the Japanese colonial period. After the Korean War, as the population in the Seochon area rapidly increased, stalls and shops formed around the public market to meet the demand for consumer spaces, gradually developing into a full-fledged market. In 2005, it was registered as an accredited market under the Special Act for the Promotion of Traditional Markets (now the Special Act for the Promotion of Traditional Markets and Shopping Districts) and equipped with modern facilities. In 2010, it was selected as a 'Seoul-type Cultural Market' by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Jongno-gu. In 2011, the market merchants' association registered Tongin Community Co., Ltd. as a village enterprise, establishing an integrated call center and delivery center, and opening an online shopping mall. With about 70 stores, the majority are food-related businesses such as restaurants and side dish shops, followed by vendors selling primary products like vegetables, fruits, fish, and meat, and then other businesses selling manufactured goods like underwear and clothing repair shops. Since January 2012, the Dosirak Cafe Tong has been operating and has received a great response.
