About
Jeonju Hanok Village, located in the Pungnam-dong area of Jeonju, is Korea's largest traditional hanok village, with over 700 hanok houses clustered together, making it the only urban hanok cluster in the country. It is an important space in the development of modern residential culture in Korea, having begun its formation in 1910, and is home to important national heritage sites such as Gyeonggijeon Shrine, Omokdae, and Hyanggyo Confucian School, as well as over 20 cultural facilities. Strolling along Hyanggyo-gil, Choi Myeong-hee-gil, and Gyeonggijeon-gil, visitors can experience the beautiful alleyways and traditional charm of the hanok village. When night falls on Jeonju Hanok Village, visitors can enjoy a sweet nightscape with angel lanterns illuminating Taejo-ro and lights that further enhance the hanok walls. Unique travel spaces such as Jeonju Nanjang, Jaman Mural Village, night markets, and Cheongnyeon Mall can also be found. The beauty of a hanok lies in its roofline, with the eaves gently curving towards the sky, which is a characteristic and charm of hanok. The structure of a hanok is largely divided into an anchae (women's quarters) and a sarangchae (men's quarters). Another feature of hanok is the ondol room. Koreans primarily live sitting down, so ondol (underfloor heating) is installed. The ondol structure involves building an agungi (furnace) outside the room and lighting a fire under the gu-deul (inside the furnace), which then warms the ondol. The biggest feature of ondol is that it is cool in summer and warm in winter. At the hanok village, there is a separate Hanok Life Experience Center. Visitors can directly experience ondol rooms in the Seonbi-bang (scholar's room) and Gyusu-bang (lady's room) within the Hanok Life Experience Center. The traditional Korean food provided during the hanok life experience is served in Napcheong yugi (brassware), adding to its taste and elegance. Jeonju Hanok Village is a place where you can experience living in a hanok and also taste the famous Jeonju Bibimbap.
